Posts: 573 11/05/09 17:35:10 Glitter	Tags : None From ET website: Kevin Bacon and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are teaming up for a new comedy, 'Whole Lotta Sole,' which is set to film in Belfast, Ireland in 2010. 'Sole' finds Rhys Meyers playing a thief whose attempt to plunder a fish market leads him to take Bacon's character hostage. Rhys Meyers has to stay one step ahead of both the police and a local gangster. Jay Russell ('My Dog Skip') has signed on to direct a script written by Terry George ('Hotel Rwanda') and Thomas Gallagher. Russell said of the project, in part, "This is a great comedy project, not like Terry's usual political fare. It's very exciting to have one of the best young actors today, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, teamed up with one of the greats, Kevin Bacon." Posts: 1502 11/06/09 05:43:55	That does sound GREAT ...... thanks mouret I think he needs to do something on the lighter side after finishing The Tudors....dark dark dark and such a challenging role this last season. I would imagine he is very tired and weary after all of that. Hope he can rest up be fore his next venture. This will be good for him.... should bring out a whole different side of him. Can't wait to see what he does with this role, but I say that about every single thing he's ever done. Comedy can very challenging too and I love the idea of him working with Kevin Bacon. Off to see if this has turned up on Variety or other showbiz sites. I know Gormenghast wasn't essentially a comedy, but Jonny made me laugh so hard all the time, he's a great comedian even if he doesn't overtly show it! Screendaily suggested it was being sold at the American Film Market but I couldn't find a listing in the catalog. I wonder how certain it is? The director has done good work as well -- I loved My Dog Skip -- but this sounds like a very different thing. Good for Jonathan that he's moving out of his comfort zone. Typical of him to do so, I suppose.

Posts: 109 11/11/09 08:05:00	All of us hear agree that Johnny should be able to sell a movie on his own, unfortunately I don't think he has the name recognition (in the US anyway) to make studio heads cast him alone. I made reservations at a restaurant where you had to use your favorite actors name for your party's name. I used Jonathan Rhys Meyers and everyone who worked there asked me who that was. So, while we all love him and can not imagine that people don't know who he is, unfortunately he has a way to go here. I am hoping that FPWL will help give him the recognition he deserves.

I would say the fact that he is being cast as a co-star with some of the very best-known in the business (Moore, Travolta, Cruise, Bacon) is a sign of his rising star, not an ill-fated career, and of the fact that he is getting in the better productions. Anyway these days it seems noone can reliably open a movie with the exception of Will Smith. And he has been the star in The Tudors, Matchpoint, COHS and Elvis in recent years. FPWL is a wide release and should do OK so that could expand his visibility.

Remember in the late 80's and early 90's when even the shittiest Julia Roberts movie made monster money just because she released one movie per year? Nowadays the movies that make money are about the special effects, concepts (manic comic book fan base, Pixar, etc) and series (Bourne, Bond). And with netflix, dvds, internet, etc, what do i care if Brad Pitt releases one movie a year? I have access to his work any time I want and there's a million other forms of entertainment for me too. In any case, I just hope JRM continues to work...period. It would be nice if he gains more recognition and better scripts, but nowadays if you're steady working actor, you're already ahead of the curve. And yes, perspective...Bend it like Beckham was the small indie movie that could, MatchPoint was an art house movie that made some money, JRM had a small supporting role in Mission Impossible (a movie that "underperformed") and finally, the Tudors averages less than a million viewers per episode on Showtime. NCIS, the number one rated show, averages about 19-20 million. And he hasn't had a movie in the theaters in two years (Children of Huang Shi was released in about 7 people's living rooms in the US in 2008). So yeah, for now, JRM remains a gem here...Oh well, more opportunities for people to discover him

I completely agree that in the current climate he is well ahead of the curve if he can get a project that actually goes forward -- much less one with the talented folks in front of and behind the camera that this one appears to have. As to The Tudors, no, not seen by tens of millions but, I think, by a few more than you suggest TD. People who get Showtime usually have on demand and they are watching it. Just not necessarily when it first airs. It's not a next-day-by-the-watercooler type show. (fewer and fewer are). When I do bring it up with folks I'm surprised how many have seen it and they all love Jonathan. But everybody has trouble with his name (Interesting that he would have been easier to remember as old Johnny O'Keeffe). There are really only a relative handful of actors known by everyone -- and too often they are known for the wrong reason or because they have been in movies for 30 years. But certainly a big wide release hit would make a major difference for him in terms of general recognition and career. It has been way too long since he was on the big screen. I can't wait.

It has a fairly limited audience and thus why JRM isn't as well-known beyond certain circles. Not a knock against him and the show, just setting the context. Recently, I found out that two co-workers love the Tudors and JRM also while we were out having drinks
