Director Pierre Morel began filming Monday near Annecy and will carry on to Paris and its environs for a total 12-week shoot. The film is based on an original idea from EuropaCorp principal Luc Besson, along with Adi Hasak, and tells the story of a young insider and an American secret agent who are thrown together in a risky mission in France's capital city. Morel, a cinematographer-turned-director, previously directed Liam Neeson in this year's EuropaCorp produced Taken and the 2004 hit Banlieue 13. Posts: 202 09/23/08 19:26:19 Sparkle	So this looks interesting. It's probably more mainstream than many of the characters he has played. That's probably a good thing at this point. And hopefully the character won't be overly dark, but not a saint as in the most recent films. As he said himself the most interesting characters have some light and dark to them. The director has had little experience but his movies got great reviews for the most part. His background is cinematography. We have so little to go on at this point but I'm hoping this is something along the lines of Spy Games with a great story and strong give and take between two solid actors. Travolta has had some rocky ones recently but he's a big star and I think he can be great. If this is a strong script (the execution looks very promising) this could be a great year for JRM with three very diverse roles.

Posts: 205 09/24/08 08:33:18 Sparkle	So reading around a little bit more the film is produced by Luc Besson, who also wrote it. The director was his long-time cinematographer. Besson has been called the French Spielberg and is a huge hit-maker with big action films. I've not seen any of them as they aren't typically what I see. But if a money-making hit is what JRM's after, this looks promising. My question is about the budget. $56 million doesn't seem like a lot for this type of movie. Is it? Travolta is already in Paris filming apparently.

And I'm not a Tom Cruise fan at all but I did go to see MI:3 just because of Declan. And I did hear a lot of good reviews of Banlieue 13, so I trust the director is good. But I'm pretty old and remember Saturday Night Fever with fondness and of course loved Pulp Fiction. What's nice about this compared with MI3 (which I didn't see in the theater) is that JRM is, presumably, getting a meaty role next to a big star (I prefer Julianne Moore but her movies don't usually make money).Travolta may be fading but one thing you can say for him; he has had more comebacks than anyone in the business.

So we don't know what the accent will be here. The press release says the movie is already presold in several countries.

Luc Besson brings a lot to this project in terms of it's profile and perhaps style. I'm guessing Jonathan will be the young insider? I definitely like the idea of this project (need to hold judgment until we learn more details) more than Mandrake or Shelter. I'm gonna be a nerd and be very curious about how JRM will play the embassy worker. I'm going to assume he will be a young American Foreign Service Officer. I've a number of friends and classmates who are FSOs and wonder if JRM will or have the time to get the background details/characteristics of FSO down pat. I have a feeling that this all came together pretty quickly and JRM may not have the time for prep.

Posts: 92 09/25/08 05:33:32 Sparkle	Funnily enough Pierre Morel was originally meant to introduce a screening of Taken I went to last night. The Q&A with Liam Neeson was good compensation lol Thought you might be interested as the film was also shot in Paris. Liam said a few things about Pierre - he's very much in control, the guv'nor, brings a lot of energy to the shoot which he's able to communicate to the actors and keeps people's spirits up when they're all tired or a bit down. He also told Liam when he was trying to maybe overdo the emotional bits that the audience got that already and let's move on! They also have to film pretty quickly on the streets - if the road is closed for filming from midnight to 3 am, that's all they're getting. Pierre also operates the camera. A couple of quotes from the programme notes: "Pierre is really calm and cool. He comes in, knows what the job is, and knows what he has to do to make it happen" - Kamen, the co-writer. Morel, though, says that along with that calm comes a responsibility to keep the energy high on the set. "Even though a lot hinges on the editing, the rhythm has to be there when you're shooting. If it's not, there's no second chance. I always ask the actors to keep up a high tempo and to be as realistic as possible. And personally, I'm really charged up in the way I shoot, so I think a lot of the movie's energy comes from that. If you take your time over things, when you start to edit, you have to trim it back down and so you lose the rhythm." …but as Neeson points out, working in the French capital - and for the first time with a French crew - also had an important upside. "One good point of working in Paris is the greater female presence in the crew. I'm very sensitive to the energy men and women combine to create on the set, but British or American crews are almost always overwhelmingly male. I was also grateful for French working hours, which are very civilised. Between fight scene rehearsals and filming, my days were pretty exhausting but we had a whole night to recover. Not to mention the pleasure of the quality of life in Paris." As far as accents go, there's quite a few different nationalities in Taken and the actors all seemed to speak English in their own natural accents. I read that a casting call for "From Paris with Love" asked for actors of Chinese, Pakistani and North African origin. Also that Travolta and JRM are not in Annecy this week.

So either JRM is still on the Tudors set or is getting mini-break. Perhaps he'll be in Paris by next week? What's your take on Taken? Ha, get it...
