Cars are regularly burned in French housing projects, most famously during rioting that raged for three weeks in 2005 in poor neighborhoods across the country. It was not immediately known who was responsible for setting alight the eight cars parked at a local stadium and two nearby early Monday, said Timm Rigal, aide to Mayor Xavier Lemoine of Montfermeil, where the housing project is located. The Europacorp production company refused to confirm the mayor's claim that the project scenes were being definitively canceled. A production official said Europacorp chief Luc Besson, the French director, writer and producer, was reviewing the situation. The official was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter and asked not to be named. The filming of the English-language movie, directed by Pierre Morel and also starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, continues with indoor scenes programmed this week, according to the production official. ___ Associated Press writer Elaine Ganley contributed to this story. I was just intending to state something obvious. That it's a shame that an opportunity for these folks, however temporary, has to be destroyed.

Posts: 246 10/15/08 06:09:15 Sparkle	I just wanted to say that I think this movie is a really interesting choice for JRM. It would also be interesting to know how much choice he actually has -- how much is about timing, money, not getting other roles and how much is about intentionally selecting a big action film and this particular project. I don't see this as oscar material type stuff -- as he called it a big commercial film -- and critically speaking the goal will be for critics to find he's put something special into the role, ie. charm, charisma, fierceness. None of his movies have made a lot of money other than MI3, but he doesn't get credit for that as it was all Cruise. (Although I get the impression that The Tudors has been a financial boon.) If this does well financially, and particularly if he delivers a really interesting performance in Shelter in the same year, this could put him in greater demand for those really top projects with the best directors, which still seem to be eluding him to some extent. NOTE: I see what I did...I read "idea" as "area." Need to get my glasses fixed or get a bigger computer screen...sorry!!! Yes, I agree that it would be a good idea financially, but if you can't get along with the locals, it's not going to matter, I guess. However, I don't see anything wrong with the producer of a film kicking in a little money to help out the area after they leave it. The problem is, it just makes them think they can keep demanding, and people get a temporary influx of cash (think stimulus checks people!) and then it's gone and where are they then? It's Paris-wood welfare. I also read somewhere that this is supposed to be Besson's last film. What a shame to have it ruined like that. I wait that everything if decides and that the film is produced with success, therefore this I would be one project very interesting for the JRM. Posts: 249 10/15/08 09:29:12 Sparkle	No worries and thanks for taking the time to get back. Internet chat can be tough. Yes, a one-time stimulus doesn't do much. But these people were probably excited for a little glamour -- so that's a shame. I read that about a final film, too. But the film's not ruined, just this idea. Anyway I've starting reading up on him and he's a really interesting and very wealthy guy who has his hands in a lot of things. If helping these folks is something he feels personally compelled to do, I'm sure he'll find productive ways to do it. Now let's get that movie made and make it a good one!

I used an online translator to translate from French to English so this isn't too pretty. Maybe someone who speaks French can do a better job for us. I assume JRM is James Reese -- wonder what accent he'll have? Also there are pictures around the internet of Travolta's look -- he's bald for the film. I can post if others are interested.
