I wouldn't count on imdb that much; JRM is still listed in Mary Mother of Christ while obviously he isn't starring in the movie anymore.

It is explained in the book--it has to do with the Irish tale of Mad King Sweeney (if you are a Riverdance fan, the song and dance "Shivna"--in
Irish, Suibhne--represents a jumping contest Sweeney had with a mill hag during a brief time of lucidity in his madness.) Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buile_Shuibhne for the story of the king and why he was mad. A lot of the
original poem about Sweeney apparently is paraphrased or taken directly into the novel. Sweeney is a character in At Swim-Two-Birds. Swim-Two-Birds (Irish,
Snamh da En, "the river current of the two birds") is supposedly a place on the River Shannon that Sweeney visited.

Thanks Bullet - it sounds complex but mystical - I wonder if it will be one of those stories where it's best to read the book first or not - sometimes I
have read books first then been slightly disappointed by the film interpretation of it

I really am crossing my fingers this project can happen for Jonathan and all concerned... what an honor it would be for Jonathan to be involved in this film!

I, too, would love to see him with this group. I have my doubts that he is involved because several recent articles and/or interviews with Gleeson have not
mentioned him, though. It's really funny but every couple of days on IMDB his name is switched from top billing to second billing under Farrell and then
back again. Does anyone know how IMDB gets their information and why they would keep switching this around? It's so strange.

I read an interview with Brendan Gleeson a little while back (can't find it now) where he said all the others had agreed and he was hoping to get JRM on
board. He also said it had to be filmed in Dublin - because of the book, not for any other reason.

It's really hard trying to imagine who would play what part, now that I've read the book. I'd assume Brendan Gleeson would be the uncle, since he
looks older than the rest. And there's all these mythical characters in the book. The part of Mad Sweeney would require a bird costume...

Here's an article that mentions At Swim Two Birds
Brendan Gleeson, for example, has put together a cast that includes Colin Farrell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Cillian Murphy and Gabriel Byrne for his directorial debut, an adaptation of Flann O'Brien's AT SWIM TWO BIRDS, which is due next year. And it's not simply a case of the horrors shivering down the spine at the idea of Oldman, Pearce et al mangling the Irish accent, begorrah, as they go about their business (seriously, is the Irish accent really that difficult to get right?). It's more that the Easter Rising was (my crass interpretation above notwithstanding) a complex, nuanced glorious failure, akin in its own way to the Spartans' stand at Thermopylae in that the main players knew they were doomed before they began, and words such as 'complex', 'nuanced' and 'glorious failure' don't play so well in Hollywood. On the positive side, one of the writers, Brendan Foley, is a Belfast man, and the director, Jason Barry, was born in Dublin, although the fact that the other writer's credits include writing the TV spectaculars 'Forbes 20 Most Expensive Celebrity Weddings' and 'America's Junior Miss 2002' doesn't bode well. http://crimealwayspays.blogspot.com/2009/10/sweet-little-16.html ' That boy from Cork accomplished a perceptible and
palpable level of immersion into his acting that was formidable to behold. '
